Ultra Virus Killer 4.5.0.0


A name like "Ultra Virus Killer" might make you think this program will strip your PC of malware all on its own, but the truth is a little more complicated: the package is more about providing tools to help you manually find and remove unwanted programs, then repair any damage they might have caused.
And so you get modules to view running processes, and the DLLs and other files they're using. The program allows you to control Windows startup programs, services, drivers and more. An alternate streams manager looks for suspect NTFS streams; you get a program to help you delete files or folders, even if they're in use; and there are modules to clean and repair your PC, even protect your Registry from modification, so maybe helping you to avoid infection in the first place.
Much of this will sound very familiar, but the program offers far more than you'll expect. The "Process Manager" isn't some feeble take on Task Manager, for instance. It's specifically oriented to malware hunting, with tools to delete multiple processes at the same time, to verify a file signature, to pause and resume a process, to search for it on Google, run process-specific checks at VirusTotal/ ThreatExpert/ Runscanner, and more.
And there's the same level of power just about everywhere you look. The "System Repair" module, for example, has tools to reset your host file and DNS to their default state; reset your PC's group policies; reset your Registry and NTFS security settings; get Windows Update working again; install or update various key components (DirectX/ Java/ Flash/ .NET); clear all your temporary folders, re-register all Windows DLLs, and the list goes on.
There are also dangers here. Resetting Registry permissions, re-registering DLLs and so on might solve some very difficult problems, but should things go wrong then they could also seriously damage your PC. And UVK does have several components which may have adverse effects (the Immunize function may prevent some malware infections, but it can also interfere with legitimate installations). This isn't a program to use unless you know what you're doing, and always have a full system backup to hand.
If you're an experienced Windows user, though, UVK has a lot to offer, being absolutely packed with effective malware hunting, PC maintenance and repair options.
Verdict:
While it leaves you to do most of the work, Ultra Virus Killer is an excellent suite of manual malware hunting tools, and there are some very useful PC maintenance and repair modules thrown in, too.

Hijack Hunter 1.8.4.1


Hijack Hunter is an interesting tool that can scan your PC for signs that might point to a malware infection, and help you to get Windows working again once the threat has been removed.
Getting started is as easy as launching the program (it's portable, so no installation is required) and clicking Scan. You may then have to wait a very long time, though, ten minutes or more, as Hijack Hunter scans all the files on your system.
Once the process is complete, Hijack Hunter will save its report to a text file and open this for you. Much of this is familiar: a list of startup programs, running processes, loaded modules, and so on. But there are plenty of more interesting settings highlighted, too.
You'll see IE's "Trusted Sites", for instance, and programs that are allowed through the Windows firewall.
Hijack Hunter will list executables in folders where they wouldn't normally be expected (drivers in \Windows\System32, say).
And you may also see details on inaccessible files, suspicious Registry keys or folders, open internet and network connections, Ring3 API hooks, your HOSTS file and more.
Files listed here won't necessarily be malware, of course, so don't start deleting them right away. Instead, visit your search engine of choice, start researching, and try to figure out whether Hijacker Hunter has picked up on an innocent program, or a real threat.
If you believe you have spotted a virus, then a Delete File function may be able to wipe the file you specify, even if it's protected.
And if the malware has hijacked some of your Windows settings, then the Restorer module could to get things working again. If you can't run the Registry Editor or Task Manager, say, just check the appropriate boxes, click Apply and Hijack Hunter will solve the problem for you.
Verdict:
Hijack Hunter is an excellent malware detector, but highly technical, and with almost no help - it's for very experienced Windows users only.

Prey 0.5.10 For Windows


Prey is a tiny free tool which could help you to recover your laptop if it's ever lost or stolen.
The program hides in the background, taking the absolute minimum of resources. If your system ever goes astray, you simply log on to the Prey site and mark it as "missing". And then, if the system is able to go online, the Prey agent will detect your alert and begin sending regular reports.
These may be able to tell you the location of your laptop, for instance. If your system has a webcam then Prey will try to take a shot of the thief. You'll also see details like the name of the currently logged-in user (perhaps helpful if your system is shared by others), and a screenshot of the desktop will reveal what they're doing right now.
And that's just the start: if you want to take action, Prey can also help you fight back. There's an option to send a message to the system, asking for its safe return. You might choose to secure it, hiding emails, deleting stored passwords and so on. And there's also a Lock option which prevents anyone from using the notebook at all until a password has been entered.
The free Prey service works well, then, and you're able to protect up to 3 devices with the same account (the program works on desktops as well as mobile devices).
But if you need more, commercial Pro accounts are also available. These enable you to get "missing" reports faster, and more frequently, support more devices and make it easier to deploy Prey in the first place. Prices start at $5 a month and you can read more at the Prey site.

ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 2012 (v10.1.056)


ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 2012 is, as you might expect from the "Extreme" tag, an unusually full-featured security suite.
It includes an excellent firewall, of course, which manages to control your applications without the hassle of endless alerts. The suite's strong on-demand and real-time antivirus protection is based on highly-rated Kaspersky technology, and the spam filter protects your Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail inbox.
And browsing protection sees ZoneAlarm Extreme Security 2012 monitoring the sites you attempt to visit, and the files you download, warning you about any that appear to be dangerous.
But there's also much more. Like solid Parental Controls, based on Net Nanny; an online backup tool with 2GB of free server space; browser virtualisation, which keeps any malware away from your system; a Registry-cleaning PC Tuneup module, private browsing, keylogger jamming, and more.
Perhaps the best example of the extra power on offer here is the Identity Protection module. Like many other suites, it allows you to enter personal information - addresses, credit card details, phone numbers and so on - and then ensures they can't leave your PC without permission. But it also offers American users a free one year subscription to Identity Guard, which provides daily credit record monitoring, email alerts of any activity, and free phone assistance if this reveals anything suspect.
There's a price to pay for this, of course, and Extreme Security 2012 is the most expensive product in the ZoneAlarm range. If you don't need quite so much power then ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite drops Registry cleaning, virtual and private browsing, and keylogger jamming, and is $10 cheaper. And if you don't need the parental controls or spam filter then opting for ZoneAlarm Antivirus + Firewall will save you another $10. A massive proportion of the websites you visit, online services you use and, increasingly, programs you may have installed, require you to log into an account with a username and password. As each of these passwords have to be a particular length, include a combination of letter, numbers, symbols and cases – as well as being unique – it is little wonder that many of us forget our login credentials from time to time.
Rather than insecurely writing them down on paper to serve as a reminder, Password Safe and Repository 7 can be used to store all of your login details in a secure database that can only be accessed using the single password you will need to remember from this point forward.
The personal edition of the program is completely free of charge, but there is only one downloadable file available. This contains all of the various editions of the program in one, so the first time you launch the program you will have to indicate that you want to work with the free, personal version. Once this has been done you’ll be guided through the initial setup process by a wizard.
Of course, sticking with the free version of the program means missing out on some of the features that are found in the commercial version. The program automatically locks when it is left unused for a short while, so there is no need to be concerned about walking away from your computer.

JAVA BASIC SYNTAX


When we consider a Java program it can be defined as a collection of objects that communicate via invoking each others methods. Let us now briefly look into what do class, object, methods and instant variables mean.
  • Object - Objects have states and behaviors. Example: A dog has states-color, name, breed as well as behaviors -wagging, barking, eating. An object is an instance of a class.
  • Class - A class can be defined as a template/ blue print that describe the behaviors/states that object of its type support.
  • Methods - A method is basically a behavior. A class can contain many methods. It is in methods where the logics are written, data is manipulated and all the actions are executed.
  • Instant Variables - Each object has its unique set of instant variables. An object's state is created by the values assigned to these instant variables.

First Java Program:


Let us look at a simple code that would print the words Hello World.

Lets look at how to save the file, compile and run the program. Please follow the steps given below:
  • Open notepad and add the code as above.
  • Save the file as : MyFirstJavaProgram.java.
  • Open a command prompt window and go o the directory where you saved the class. Assume its C:\.
  • Type ' javac MyFirstJavaProgram.java ' and press enter to compile your code. If there are no errors in your code the command prompt will take you to the next line.( Assumption : The path variable is set).
  • Now type ' java MyFirstJavaProgram ' to run your program.
  • You will be able to see ' Hello World ' printed on the window.

         C : > javac MyFirstJavaProgram.java
         C : > java MyFirstJavaProgram
          Hello World

Basic Syntax:

About Java programs, it is very important to keep in mind the following points.
  • Case Sensitivity - Java is case sensitive which means identifier Hello and hello would have different meaning in Java.
  • Class Names - For all class names the first letter should be in Upper Case. 

    If several words are used to form a name of the class each inner words first letter should be in Upper Case.

    Example class MyFirstJavaClass
  • Method Names - All method names should start with a Lower Case letter. 

    If several words are used to form the name of the method, then each inner word's first letter should be in Upper Case.

    Example public void myMethodName()
  • Program File Name - Name of the program file should exactly match the class name. 

    When saving the file you should save it using the class name (Remember java is case sensitive) and append '.java' to the end of the name. (if the file name and the class name do not match your program will not compile).

    Example : Assume 'MyFirstJavaProgram' is the class name. Then the file should be saved as'MyFirstJavaProgram.java'
  • public static void main(String args[]) - java program processing starts from the main() method which is a mandatory part of every java program..

Java Identifiers:

All java components require names. Names used for classes, variables and methods are called identifiers.
In java there are several points to remember about identifiers. They are as follows:
  • All identifiers should begin with a letter (A to Z or a to z ), currency character ($) or an underscore (_).
  • After the first character identifiers can have any combination of characters.
  • A key word cannot be used as an identifier.
  • Most importantly identifiers are case sensitive.
  • Examples of legal identifiers:age, $salary, _value, __1_value
  • Examples of illegal identifiers : 123abc, -salary

Java Modifiers:

Like other languages it is possible to modify classes, methods etc by using modifiers. There are two categories of modifiers.
  • Access Modifiers : default, public , protected, private
  • Non-access Modifiers : final, abstract, strictfp
We will be looking into more details about modifiers in the next section.

Java Variables:

We would see following type of variables in Java:
  • Local Variables
  • Class Variables (Static Variables)
  • Instance Variables (Non static variables)

Java Arrays:

Arrays are objects that store multiple variables of the same type. However an Array itself is an object on the heap. We will look into how to declare, construct and initialize in the upcoming chapters.

Java Enums:

Enums were introduced in java 5.0. Enums restrict a variable to have one of only a few predefined values. The values in this enumerated list are called enums.
With the use of enums it is possible to reduce the number of bugs in your code.
For example if we consider an application for a fresh juice shop it would be possible to restrict the glass size to small, medium and Large. This would make sure that it would not allow anyone to order any size other than the small, medium or large.

Note: enums can be declared as their own or inside a class. Methods, variables, constructors can be defined inside enums as well.

The following list shows the reserved words in Java. These reserved words may not be used as constant or variable or any other identifier names.

Comments in Java

Java supports single line and multi-line comments very similar to c and c++. All characters available inside any comment are ignored by Java compiler.

Using Blank Lines:

A line containing only whitespace, possibly with a comment, is known as a blank line, and Java totally ignores it.

Inheritance:

In java classes can be derived from classes. Basically if you need to create a new class and here is already a class that has some of the code you require, then it is possible to derive your new class from the already existing code.
This concept allows you to reuse the fields and methods of the existing class with out having to rewrite the code in a new class. In this scenario the existing class is called the super class and the derived class is called the subclass.

Interfaces:

In Java language an interface can be defined as a contract between objects on how to communicate with each other. Interfaces play a vital role when it comes to the concept of inheritance.
An interface defines the methods, a deriving class(subclass) should use. But the implementation of the methods is totally up to the subclass.

ENVIRONMENT SETUP FOR JAVA


Before we proceed further it is important that we set up the java environment correctly. This section guides you on how to download and set up Java on your machine. Please follow the following steps to set up the environment.
Java SE is freely available from the link Download Java. So you download a version based on your operating system.
Follow the instructions to download java and run the .exe to install Java on your machine. Once you installed Java on your machine, you would need to set environment variables to point to correct installation directories:

Setting up the path for windows 2000/XP:

Assuming you have installed Java in c:\Program Files\java\jdk directory:
      ==> Right-click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'.
      ==> Click on the 'Environment variables' button under the 'Advanced' tab.
    ==> Now alter the 'Path' variable so that it also contains the path to the Java executable. Example, if the path is currently set to 'C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32', then change your path to read 'C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32;c:\Program Files\java\jdk\bin'.

Setting up the path for windows 95/98/ME:

Assuming you have installed Java in c:\Program Files\java\jdk directory:
      ==> Edit the 'C:\autoexec.bat' file and add the following line at the end: 
      ==> 'SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\Program Files\java\jdk\bin'

Setting up the path for Linux, UNIX, Solaris, FreeBSD:

Environment variable PATH should be set to point to where the java binaries have been installed. Refer to your shell documentation if you have trouble doing this.
Example, if you use bash as your shell, then you would add the following line to the end of your '.bashrc: export PATH=/path/to/java:$PATH'

To write your java programs you will need a text editor. There are even more sophisticated IDE available in the market. But for now, you can consider one of the following:
